What are the Requirements to Become an Art Teacher?

Art teachers bring light and beauty into the lives of their students while educating them on the finest forms of expression available to humans from the dawn of time. An art teacher can be the catalyst for a wide range of emotions which will then be poured onto a canvas or another type of medium, creating the physical expression of feeling. But becoming an art teacher requires preparation, the amount of which will depend exclusively at which level you want to teach.

For example, if you plan on teaching a course at home during the summer, you will only need to understand the basic concepts of art, but if you want to teach art at a high school level, there are a few requirements that must be fulfilled. In general, all art teachers must develop a variety of artistic talents, including those that involve the use of oil paints, watercolors, and other mediums.

One of the most important requirements to become an art teacher is a bachelor's degree in art education with a concentration in one of the many related fields, including art history or sculpture. Even though the specific course work will vary depending on the specific field chosen, some of the common subjects required to become an art teacher include color theory, some form of design which can be digital or traditional, and painting with a variety of mediums, as well as sculpture and ceramics.

If you are planning to work within the public school system, once you have obtained your bachelor's degree in art education, you must become certified as a teacher. Although the requirements can differ according to your location, in most cases you must successfully complete an exam that will test your knowledge on art related subjects as well as general topics, including math and reading comprehension. This requirement may not be necessary for those looking to teach at private schools or other institutions.

The career options for art teachers will be increasing over the next few years, so a solid preparation today can open the door to a job you love and enjoy, as you teach the next generation of children how art can make life better.
