What are the Requirements to Become a Detective?

Detectives are employed by city, state, federal, and military agencies. Detectives perform duties similar to those of a police officer. Pursuing and arresting individuals who are breaking the law, patrolling, conducting investigations, and collecting evidence are some of the job functions that a detective may complete. Detectives must also keep and maintain accurate records of reports and case files.

What are the Responsibilities of a Detective?

Detectives usually participate in arrests or raids, collect evidence, perform investigations and examinations of citizens and suspects. Detectives are usually not in uniform and work a normal 40-hour workweek; detectives are generally expected to work on-call and when needed.

What are the General Requirements to Become a Detective?
  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen
  • Possess a high school education or equivalent
  • Meet physical tests
  • Meet personal qualifications
  • Typically applicants must be at least 20 years of age
Additionally, some agencies may require a one-, two- or four-year college education. Many agencies offer tuition assistance for detectives to complete college courses in criminal justice and other types of course work.

What type of Training is Necessary?

Most detectives are previous police officers, which requires its own training. Training is performed at a police academy and is between 12 to 14 weeks. Training usually consists of the use of firearms, first aid administration, emergency response tactics, self-defense training, traffic control, and patrol.
