What are the Requirements to Become an Author?

Technically there are no requirements to become an author. When you feel you have a story to share with the world, you sit down with pen and paper, or fire up your computer and start writing.

For most people, starting a novel or children's book is no problem. They are full of enthusiasm and write with fire in their fingers. But as the story progresses, they lose some of that initial excitement and find it hard to continue the story or see it through to the end. Making the transition from writer to author not only takes imagination and a talent to transfer ideas into written words, it takes determination and self-discipline.

If you know you easily lose interest, or you feel you might need some help in seeing the project through, one of the requirements to become an author might be taking a writing course. Not only will a writing course help you with the technical aspects of writing, it will supply you with tips on how to stay on track, how to generate ideas and how to become the best author you can be.

If you're a people person you can make inquiries at local schools and colleges who run writing courses. A teacher will explain the requirements of becoming an author, will issue assignments with deadlines, and will be able to give you honest feedback on your work. You can also join a writing group. A writing group is less formal than a classroom, but still offers knowledge and feedback from peers.

If you prefer to study from the comfort of your own home, there are on-line writing courses you can take. Caution should be exercised though, a lot of on-line writing courses are expensive but are of little or no value.

So, while there are no formal requirements to become an author, there are plenty of pitfalls. That shouldn't prevent you from giving writing a try though. You might just be a natural with a flair for storytelling.

As a general rule, if writing makes you happy, go for it. Writing can not only be fun, it can very therapeutic.
