What are the Requirements to Become a Realtor?

A realtor is a real estate agent or real estate professional that is a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR), who subscribes to a strict code of ethics. Realtors are not only real estate agents but are also appraisers, attorneys, insurance agents, and mortgage brokers, and these are only a few examples. The National Association of Realtors awards designations and certifications to realtors specializing in a certain areas within the real estate industry.

What are the Education Requirements to Become a Realtor?

Assuming you hold the proper professional license in your area of expertise, requirements to become a realtor vary depending on which designation or certification you choose. Generally, a high school diploma or equivalent is required along with courses and training in the area you wish to specialize in. In addition to coursework in finance, business, economics, property law, or accounting, all states require realtors to pass a written exam. Typically, you can only take the exam after completing a certain amount of formal training. You must keep your license current, and some states require ongoing training to stay certified.

Various designations and certifications are awarded through the NAR and various affiliated groups. These titles show the public and other individuals that the realtor has experience and expertise in their chosen field. Earning these titles are possible through completing specific courses though the NAR or your local state board of realtors.
