What are the Requirements to Become a Cardiologist?

A cardiologist helps patients ensure that their hearts are as healthy as possible. As a medical specialty profession, cardiology requires intense education and training to ensure that the cardiologist is well prepared to attend to the needs of people who are struggling with heart health. The end result is a career that saves lives and helps people live a life that is as healthy as possible, and this can be quite rewarding

Skills Needed for a Career in Cardiology

Cardiology is a specialized branch of medicine that requires specific skills to do well. These include:
  • Dexterity to perform complex surgical techniques
  • Good communication skills to communicate with patients and families
  • Attention to detail to ensure the best health for your patients
  • Patience as you help your patients get better
  • Physical stamina to handle long days on the surgical floor or hospital ward
  • Organizational skills to help you manage your own practice and keep the needs of different patients in order
Cardiology Education and Training

Cardiology instruction begins with a bachelor's degree from a four-year university. Many students will pursue a pre-med or science program, as this provides the right foundation for entrance to medical school, but this is not an actual requirement.

Entrance to medical school is highly competitive. To gain entry you will need to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), and submit your scores, letters of recommendation and transcripts to the medical school of your choice. If your application shows potential, you will be granted an interview and, potentially, admission into the program.

Medical school takes approximately four years to complete. The first two years involve largely classroom-based instruction, followed by instruction in the field as an intern. After completing four years of medical school, you will then need to complete an internal medicine residency, which takes another three years.

After that, you will need to apply to a cardiology fellowship, where you will gain your cardiology training. Following this intense schedule of education, you will finally have the training you need to be a practicing cardiologist.
