What are the Requirements to Become a Gym Teacher?

Help Children Stay Healthy as a Gym Teacher

Are you interested in helping children reach their full potential, instilling confidence for life, and teaching critical health skills? These are all profound benefits of having a career as a gym teacher. The requirements to become a gym teacher are structured and challenging, ultimately resulting in a positive, motivating career if teaching physical education is your goal.

Requirements to Become a Gym Teacher

In addition to needing some expertise in physical fitness, gym teachers face many of the same requirements as classroom teachers do, including:
  • All public school teachers are required to earn a teaching license. License requirements vary from state to state, but almost always include the completion of courses in psychology, child development, educational philosophy and more.
  • Gym teachers are often required to have a bachelor's degree in physical education or some other physical field of study, like physiology or kinesiology. In other cases, you might be required to provide evidence of your athletic experience.
  • Teachers are required to keep learning, so you would be responsible for completing ongoing education while employed as a gym teacher.
  • Like all educators, gym teachers are required to be good with the children they teach--to be open, communicative, encouraging and engaged.
If you see yourself in those requirements or find yourself thinking "that sounds just like me!", it is time for you to take the next step and begin your education. By educating yourself in education and physical health, you are aggressively focused on the requirements to be a gym teacher and well on your way to being a leading candidate when you are ready to apply for jobs.
