What are the Requirements to Become a Court Reporter?

If you are looking for an interesting career and find the judicial field to be quite interesting, you should consider becoming a court reporter. Court reporters have an important job in the community, and are depended upon for many important record-keeping transcripts, including those for legal proceedings, speeches, trials and meetings.

Becoming a Court Reporter

Most court reporting and stenography programs can be completed at a college or university, allowing you to earn an Associate's degree, which can be completed in as little as two or three years. Because technology is constantly evolving and changing, a court reporter's job will also vary according to the method of transcription. You may be required to take an additional six month training program such as steno mask usage or voice captioning.

Court reporters can also train using online classes in addition to on-campus programs, taking advantage of additional specializations which might help in the medical setting. Depending on where you live, your occupation as a court reporter may require special licensing, and you may be required to pass one or more state given examinations.

Skills Obtained as a Court Reporter

As a court reporter, you will be expected to behave in a professional manner at all times and pass a criminal background check. A detail oriented court reporter must also possess accurate and concise listening and stenography skills, an excellent knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation, and a good working knowledge of legal and/or medical terminology. If you desire a position in the legal system, you should also have a good understanding of courtroom protocol and how the legal system functions.

Court Reporting, a Great Career Path

With a career in court reporting, you will have a wide variety or work settings to choose from, even television if you have training or experience with the hearing impaired. As technology advances and changes, your job will offer variety and new challenges.
