What are the Requirements to Become a Tax Preparer?

Did you know that you do not need to be a certified accountant or auditor to assist people with their taxes? Every year, countless individuals, families, and businesses approach tax preparers to handle all of the filing and paperwork necessary for annual tax returns. As a professional in this field, you do not need the advanced training and background of certified public accountants, nor are you expected to handle all of the same responsibilities. With fairly limited training, you focus exclusively on areas such as:
  • Investigating deductions
  • Filing tax returns
  • Filling out forms
  • Compiling receipts
  • Documenting assets, holdings, and equity
If you have a natural gift with numbers and have already spent years filing your own taxes, you might consider becoming a professional tax preparer, if only for close friends and family. Doing so is a lot easier than you might think.

Requirements to Become a Tax Preparer

Currently, there are no generally mandated requirements to become a professional tax preparer. What you do need, however, is a strong command of tax and accounting practices. This is why many aspiring professionals go to school to complete an associate's degree or higher in some aspect of accounting or tax law. The recent proliferation of tax software and online tutorials could actually make education even more important in the future since potential clients increasingly have a range of tax preparation options from which to choose. In order to distinguish yourself from cookie-cutter solution, it helps to have some formal training under your belt.

If you already feel comfortable with the subject matter, you might consider becoming an accredited tax preparer (ATP) by passing your state's licensing requirements. While not mandatory, this extra certification can help you secure business or impress potential employers later down the road.
