What are the Requirements to Become a Lawyer?

A career as a lawyer is as diverse as the settings in which lawyers practice. As a lawyer, you can help develop policies in various areas of the law, from real estate to adoption. Once you develop your practice, you have the option to work independently, for a corporation, or law firm. You also have the option to work in any number of fields. You can choose to work in employment law, contract law, or civil litigation. A lawyer can also work in criminal law, in a public forum or private industry. Some individuals choose to work for the district attorney's office prosecuting criminals.

Requirements to Become a Lawyer
You are required to earn a bachelor's degree before entering law school. Many pre-law students focus on subjects that improve critical reading and thinking skills, such as history, communications, or political science.

Law school typically takes three years to complete. You must have excellent communication skills, writing, analysis, and critical thinking skills. Entering law school is highly competitive, and applicants are required to take the LSAT, which tests your reading comprehension, writing, and reasoning skills. Core courses include civil procedures, tort law, and constitutional law.

Lawyers are required to become licensed by taking the state bar examination. Continuing education is required in order to remain licensed to practice law, and most states require you to pass their particular exam in order to practice within that state.
