What are the Requirements to Become a Chaplain?

What is a Chaplain?

A chaplain serves as the spiritual representative of a secular organization. It is an extremely rewarding role. Being a chaplain requires special skills. Some of these skills are compassion, concern, and empathy. Do you like to help others reach their potential? Have people told you that you are a natural born leader? Chaplains assist with the spiritual and emotional well-being of other people. The chaplain can provide services such as, communion, weddings, funerals, and public prayer meetings.

Additionally, chaplains provide counseling services for those who need it in the community. Many people visit with a chaplain in times of need when they are seeking advice. Different organizations may have a need for chaplains. For example, you may find chaplains in schools, hospitals, fire departments, sports teams, and law-enforcement. Chaplains are the spiritual leaders for their communities. They help the faithful on in their spiritual journey and strengthen their relationships with other people in the community.

How to become a Chaplain

Many chaplains are ordained as service ministers. However, this is not a requirement. You do not have to be ordained as a minister to work as a chaplain. Some chaplain positions will require that you already serve as a religious leader. This though is also not a requirement. Each organization will have its own specific requirements. There are certification programs that can help you become a chaplain. For example, the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) offers certification in this field. Sometimes the specific religion will determine what type of certification program that you will need. There are specialized chaplain programs for the Catholic and Jewish faiths.

Not all chaplain certification programs occur in the classroom. Some of these certification programs may occur in a distance learning environment, where you can gain the proper qualifications by training online. You may need to go into a classroom occasionally. However, the bulk of your training and learning will be online.

If you think you have what it takes to become a chaplain, contact the certification program to get started. If you have already have a desired position in mind, contact them to find out their exact requirements before you start your certification program.
