What are the Requirements to Become a Secret Service Agent?

What It Takes to be a Secret Service Agent

Are you a patriot looking for alternative ways to serve your country? Would you like to protect the lives of important politicians and dignitaries from all over the world, and also help safeguard the financial security of your fellow American citizens? If you answered yes to the above questions, you may want to consider joining the ranks of the United States Secret Service. Secret service agents' responsibilities are twofold: protecting the president, vice president, secretary of state, visiting heads of foreign states (as well as the families of these individuals); and investigating financial crimes, such as counterfeiting and identity theft.

Requirements to Become a Secret Service Agent

Provisional requirements mandate that candidates must:
  • Be between the ages of 21 and 37 at the time of appointment
  • Possess a current driver's license
  • Possess visual acuity of at least 20/60 uncorrected, correctable to 20/20
If you meet the above qualifications, you may be considered for employment in the Secret Service. Further requirements to become a special agent include:
  • A bachelor's degree, along with a record of sterling academic performance (alternatively, you may qualify with one year of graduate education or specialized work experience, e.g. investigative police work)
  • A physical fitness evaluation
  • Successful completion of the Treasury Enforcement Agent test
  • In-depth interviews, as well as a polygraph exam, drug screening, and background investigations
  • Completion of the 10 week Basic Criminal Investigator Training program and the 17 week Special Agent Basic Training program
  • Firearms proficiency
